Relationships can be deeply rewarding, but they can also become difficult, particularly when communication breaks down, trust has been affected, or both partners feel unheard, misunderstood or emotionally disconnected.
You may find yourselves having the same arguments repeatedly, struggling to communicate without becoming defensive, feeling distant from one another, or finding it difficult to talk about intimacy, sex, parenting, finances, boundaries or other areas of your relationship.
Sometimes couples reach a point where they feel stuck and are unsure how to move forward.
Couples counselling can provide a safe, confidential and boundaried space to slow things down, understand what is happening within the relationship and explore whether meaningful change is possible.
I offer couples counselling in Chorley, Lancashire, as well as online couples counselling across the UK and Ireland.
One of the most important things I encourage couples to consider is that change cannot simply be about getting the other person to change.
“If there is no change, then there is no change.”
It can be understandable to hope that counselling will help your partner see what they are doing wrong or change their behaviour. However, lasting relationship change usually requires both people to be willing to reflect on their own experiences, responses, needs and contribution to the relationship dynamic.
This does not mean taking blame or responsibility for everything that has happened.
Instead, couples counselling can help you explore questions such as:
I am a Person-Centred Counsellor, trained Attachment-Based Psychotherapist and trained Couples Counsellor.
My approach is warm, relational and trauma-informed, while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
Attachment-based couples counselling can help us consider the emotional patterns underneath relationship difficulties. Sometimes arguments are not really about the subject being discussed. Beneath the disagreement there may be feelings of rejection, abandonment, fear, shame, loneliness, inadequacy or a need for reassurance and connection.
Understanding these underlying patterns can help couples begin to recognise what is happening between them rather than simply becoming caught up in the conflict itself.
I can help you explore communication, emotional needs, boundaries, listening, trust, intimacy and connection, while supporting each partner to have space to be heard.
As your couples counsellor, I am the mediator and facilitator of the therapeutic process.
I am not there to decide who is right or wrong, take one person's side, or tell you what decision you should make about your relationship.
My role is to create a safe, respectful and confidential environment for exploration and growth, where both partners have an opportunity to speak and be heard.
There may be times when conversations feel uncomfortable or emotions become heightened. This can be part of meaningful therapeutic work, but sessions will remain appropriately boundaried and focused on emotional safety and respectful communication.
The aim is not to avoid difficult conversations. It is to develop healthier ways of having them.
Couples counselling and relationship therapy may be helpful when you are experiencing:
Communication difficulties
Frequent arguments or recurring conflict
Emotional disconnection
Difficulties with trust
Relationship breakdown or uncertainty
Changes in your relationship following major life events
Attachment difficulties and insecure attachment patterns
Anxiety or depression affecting the relationship
Difficulties with boundaries
People-pleasing or difficulty expressing needs
Jealousy or insecurity
Intimacy and connection difficulties
Sex and intimacy concerns
Difficult conversations that feel impossible to have alone
Parenting or family pressures
The impact of addiction or mental health difficulties on a relationship
Repetitive or ruminating thoughts affecting the relationship
Difficulties listening and feeling heard
Rebuilding connection following periods of conflict or distance
Couples counselling is not about forcing a relationship to continue or encouraging a relationship to end. It is an opportunity to understand what is happening within the relationship and consider what meaningful change may look like for both of you.
A range of counselling experience
Alongside my couples counselling training, I have undertaken additional training and professional development in areas including attachment-based psychotherapy, addiction, autism in girls, anxiety and depression, grief and loss, self-harm, suicidal ideation, OCD, rumination and intrusive thoughts, mental health, sex and intimacy, relationships, and communication and listening skills.
This wider experience allows me to consider the individual as well as the relationship, while recognising that every couple and every relationship is different.
I am based in Chorley, Lancashire, and currently offer counselling across the UK and Ireland.
Couples sessions can be provided online via Zoom or another mutually agreed secure online platform, making counselling accessible if travelling to appointments is difficult.
Depending on suitability and circumstances, I also offer:
Online counselling
Home visits
Walk-and-talk counselling
Telephone counselling
Please contact me to discuss which format may be most appropriate for your circumstances.
I also offer later evening appointments, which can be particularly helpful for couples who have childcare commitments, work shifts or busy family schedules.
You do not have to wait until your relationship reaches crisis point before seeking support.
Sometimes couples seek counselling because they want to understand each other better, improve communication or strengthen their relationship before difficulties become more established.
Other couples may arrive feeling exhausted, disconnected or unsure whether things can change.
Wherever you are in your relationship, counselling provides an opportunity to pause the cycle, listen differently and begin to understand what is happening beneath the surface.
Change starts with a willingness to look at what is happening between you — and what each of you can bring to creating something different.
