I had a difficult start in life which was quite traumatic. Growing up in survival mode can shape how you see the world and relate to others.
Upon leaving school, I saw my ability to survive as a strength - and in many ways, it was. Survival skills can create a tough exterior, making it seem like resilience. But beneath that, there were deeper struggles with self-worth and confidence that I hadn't fully recognised yet.
My journey into counselling helped me to realise was what I thought was strength, was actually a coping mechanism.
~ Break-free from limited beliefs ~
For a while, I worked as a Therapeutic Residential Children’s Social Worker which was both rewarding and challenging, caring for children having experienced abuse at the hands of their caregivers. I began realising that I wasn't alone, and that there were others that were much worse off than me.
I gained valuable insights from the psychotherapist, and from there on I knew where my passion lay, and where I was heading in my career. I found a field where I could make a positive impact and continue to grow both personally and professionally, while making a significant difference in those children’s lives, and training in ‘life story’ work.
I have worked in personal insolvency, and the social housing sector, collaborating with local councils on various issues such as homelessness, safeguarding, hoarding, self-harm, and mental health. My involvement in keeping people safe and supporting them to live independently at home has been interesting and incredibly valuable to individuals, families, and communities.
My counselling journey demonstrates a passion for helping vulnerable individuals, training in addiction services, working with the judicial system, homeless individuals, suicide ideation and severe mental health conditions such as psychosis, schizophrenia, and disassociation, demonstrates my dedication to helping those in society most in need.
I have worked for the NHS and have provided online and telephone counselling, which shows my commitment to making counselling and mental health services accessible and available to different settings and communities. My multifaceted experience enables me to approach each situation with empathy, understanding, and the necessary skills to provide effective support and assistance, with a deeper knowledge of how to keep people safe.
Facing adversity can be overwhelming, but it is also an opportunity for growth.
Life is a Journey – not a Destination
“I have had counselling before but it was nothing like the service that Kate provided. I felt very safe to share my feelings. Kate has helped me find my confidence again. She has taught me a lot about boundaries which I am now able to use effectively. Counselling has completely changed my life.”
Micah - Mental Health
“I felt safe opening up about things I haven't even been able to share with my family, due to enormous feelings of shame. I have felt much lighter as a result of having therapy, and Kate has been so kind.”
Marjorie - Grief/Loss
“After a failed relationship, the loss of my children, abuse and the effects of growing up within a strict Mormon faith, I turned to drugs and alchol. Kate and the team at CGL have helped me to understand what has happened to me which led to my drug induced psychosis. I am now able to live the life that I choose for myself I have a new partner who is kind and supportive. Previously my life had been chaotic but now I am clean, it is calm and peaceful I can enjoy the outdoors again and have returned to my love of wood carving.”
Tony - Drugs & Alcohol
